But generally I don't believe they can do to much, as they still shouldn't be able to purchase the content of a site that has been created by volunteers under a non-commercial license. I don't know how Fandom's policies may have changed, if they can step in and enact their own new admins and editors to keep a "dead" wiki going. The wiki I was a part of likewise didn't have the option to simply move everything over, URL and all - Wikia at the time had purchased our servers directly, since they couldn't legally purchase the wiki's CC content - but since Wikia only hosted the site at that point, they had no say in what we did with the front page and everything else within it. If there's consensus among the admins, I'd like to also note the option in the case of a fork to simply display a notice on the main page telling visitors that the old wiki is no longer maintained. And self-host is of course the ultimate freedom, though also the most risky, due to funding and all that.

I can't speak to how good of an option Miraheze is - not familiar with them - but "not Wikia" is a pretty good pro already. Run, run away from it if at all possible! Yes, some wikis on Wikia/Fandom do just fine, but for the most part, it's where good wikis go to die (and to line Wikia's pockets). The brand change to Fandom from Gamepedia may come across as a bit "unprofessional" as a Wiki.Īs someone who was a part of a once-independent wiki that got gobbled up by Wikia in the past (which is now branded Fandom). Some extensions which help QoL for editors are simply not allowed on Fandom. This may delay extension updates that would otherwise work on base MediaWiki.
